Hallo!

Hallo!
When you’ re deciding to make such an extreme change as living in another country, one of the first and most important questions to be answered is how much it costs to live in this place.
Regardless of whether you are moving with a job in mind or if you intend to search the destination, it is important to have an idea of how much you need for basic expenses. So we decided to write this post to answer this question.
Here in Germany the answer depends on where you intend to live, in fact we think this can be a statement for any place, the closer to a large urban centre, the more expensive, but also in general the job opportunities are higher and so are the incomes.
Those who follow our blog the longest know that when we arrived we went to live in Thuringia, one of the smallest German states located in the centre of the country. Thuringia is one of the states that made up the former East Germany, in addition, we lived in a city with 12,000 inhabitants, factors that contribute greatly to the low cost of living in the region.
It is important to remember that we are a family, so the values we will treat are related to our situation, a family with 2 children. And the values are taken from our experience in the Wartburg district from Thuringia and the Munich metropolitan area from Bavaria.
There our basic expenses were much lower than here in Bavaria, starting with the rent. In fact, it is important to point out that anywhere in Germany the item that weighs most heavily on the household budget is rent, and secondly comes food.
In Thuringia it is possible to rent an apartment with two bedrooms, which will be in the ad as 3 Zimmer (because they consider the living room as a bedroom), paying about 500€ of cold rent (Kaltmiete), but here the rentals have an extra fee that includes the expenses with water, garbage and/or housekeeping, which are extremely variable, but on average are around 50€ per person, which makes the hot rent (Warmmiette) around 700€.
In Bavaria it is very difficult to find an apartment of 3 Zimmer for less than 1000€ (Kaltmiete), so for the costs with rent is convenient to prepare with at least 1200€/month. For a more refined search, there are two links in the portals references of rentals here, Immowelt.de and Immobilienscout24.de.
However, not every owner accepts to rent a 2 bedroom apartment for a family with 2 children, and as here in Bavaria the demand is very high for rentals, the owners feel more comfortable to make the requirements they want.
For the rent it is also important to consider that an initial deposit which costs between 2 and 3 rentals will be required, there is also the possibility to use a guarantor and the insurance-guarantees are rarely accepted here.
The second biggest expense is food, the prices in the markets also have a certain variation depending on the region, but in general a family with 4 people spends about 100€ per week. The monthly hygiene expenses are around 100€, we are splitting it up because normally this kind of product is not buy in the markets but in the drugstores that have more variety of products and prices.
Another value that needs to be considered is the energy and heating. They usually consider 50€ per person/month for the contract. And here there is something interesting, you make this fixed value annual contract that is paid in 11 parcels. At the end of the year it is verified if you spent more or less and then the adjustment is made for the following year, and obviously if you spent more you will have to pay the difference, if it was cheaper, you receive the difference in cash.
The internet monthly fee is around 40€/ month, and it is also necessary to consider that every house/apartment must pay the radio and television tax, regardless of whether they have the electronics or not. This tax costs around 200€/year and is independent of the number of people living in the residence.
It is possible to choose between public and private schools, but considering that public schools are of very high quality, we will not consider the expenses with school fees. Expenses for materials are low since here it is very common to reuse the materials from one year to the next and the books are usually borrowed by the schools.
Here the health system is a public-private hybrid and everyone should have a health plan that if the person demonstrates that he or she cannot afford the expenses, can be paid by the state. But if you are employed, a percentage is deducted from your salary. When we arrived we made our health plan privately and for the family we paid about 170€.
The minimum salary in Germany is 9.35€/hour, and for specialized jobs there is a table for the calculation which is in the references of this post. However, the wage differences here are not as expressive as in Brazil, and to receive more than 2 minimum wages is not so common. 1,626.90€ is the minimum gross monthly income.
The discounts are also high and vary depending on the tax class the person is inserted, and can reach 50% of the salary. In general, higher salaries have higher discounts, single people and no children too. For those who want to better understand how the taxes are taxed there is also a link in the references.
Entertainment is a quite variable cost depending on personal preferences, but a visit to the cinema costs us about 50€ and to the zoo about 100€, an afternoon in a climbing park for the family doesn’t come out less than 30€, so let’s consider 50€ per person spent on leisure in one month.
Below we put a table with the average values in each region for comparison:
Item | Thuringia | Bavaria |
Rental | 700€ | 1200€ |
Food | 400€ | 400€ |
Hygiene | 100€ | 100€ |
Energy/heating | 200€ | 200€ |
Internet | 40€ | 40€ |
Health insurance | 170€ | 170€ |
Entertainment | 200€ | 200€ |
Total | 1810€ | 2310€ |
We hope this post will be useful for those who are planning the change and wanted to have an idea of how much is needed to make the dream viable.
Auf Wiedersehen!
